the night is not silent

the night is not silent

in the bloody violent city
the dark corners
weighty and full
with wailing and lamentation
from wounds
some fresh some festering
both of body and mind

the night is not silent

as people are broken
under heavy oppressive yokes
tears testify and bear witness
to frustrated blind rage and grief
how long?
how long?

the night is not silent

as these mutely endure
brutalization and beating
for paralyzing fear
yet lift screams within
of horror and despair

the night is not silent

for unto us
a Child is born
a Son is given
this One to be
the Prince of Peace
amen yes amen
glory to God in the highest

but still
hush quiet
and listen

the night is not silent

  1. Yes.

One of my former seminary professors posted a new song he just wrote for Advent. It reminded me of this poem.

  2. So well written. I once heard Wendell Berry say that there is a lot of wonderful Christian poetry being penned today, but I have had a difficult time finding anything that's not typical Christian "cheesy" – for lack of a better description. If anyone has any suggestions I would be grateful. Thanks!
